Athletic Academics

The Athletic Academic Department at EMCC is dedicated to the success of student-athletes in the classroom. Our goals are that every student-athlete is academically eligible to compete in the NJCAA, every student-athlete is given the structure and support needed to graduate from EMCC within two years, and that every student-athlete is academically eligible to compete  at the next level. 

The Athletic Academic staff provides the following services to our student-athletes, coaches and faculty:

  • Advising and registering of classes each semester
  • Approval of all schedule changes/ class drops
  • Monitoring of class attendance
  • Bi-monthly grade checks
  • Constant dialogue with faculty to insure opportunities for academic success
  • Individual tutoring/mentoring meetings
  • Open access to study room with computer access
  • Travel letters excusing athletes for away contests
  • Scholar-Athlete awards given yearly to the athlete with the highest GPA on each team

 Recent EMCC Academic Awards

  • 2014 EMCC softfball team garnered NJCAA Softball Academic Team of the Year accolades for the second straight year (3.57 cumulative GPA).
  • 2013-14: 2 teams earned NJCAA All-Academic Team; All 6 MACJC-affiliated teams collected MACJC Academic All-State Team honors for the fourth straight year; 93% overall graduation rate of the 58 EMCC student-athletes certified for graduation; School-record numbers posted with 17 NJCAA Academic Student-Athlete Award recipients and 31 MACJC Academic All-State selections; Three student-athletes achieve NJCAA Pinnacle Award distinction for having perfect 4.00 cumulative grade point averages.
  • 2013 NJCAA Football National Champions recorded a program-best 2.93 cumulative GPA during their second national championship season in three years.
  • 2013 EMCC softball team received NJCAA Softball Academic Team of the Year honors with a 3.59 cumulative team grade point average. 
  • 2012-13: 2 teams earned NJCAA All-Academic Team; All 6 MACJC-affiliated teams earned MACJC Academic All-State Team; 8 NJCAA Academic Student-Athlete Award recipients and 17 MACJC Academic All-State honorees; Three student-athletes achieve NJCAA Pinnacle Award distinction for having perfect 4.00 cumulative grade point averages.
  • 2011 NJCAA Football National Champions posted a 2.67 team GPA during their championship season.
  • 2011-12: 4 teams earned NJCAA All-Academic Team; All 6 MACJC-affiliated teams earned MACJC Academic All-State Team; 5 NJCAA Academic Student-Athlete Award recipients and 17 MACJC Academic All-State honorees. 
  • 2010-11 Halbrook Award winner for graduating the highest percentage (98%) of student-athletes among Mississippi’s 15 two-year colleges.
  • 2010-11: 4 teams earned NJCAA All-Academic Team; All 6 MACJC-affiliated teams earned MACJC Academic All-State; 6 NJCAA Academic Student-Athlete Award recipients and 18 MACJC Academic All-State honorees.
  • No EMCC team has posted a semester GPA lower than 2.56 under Wagner’s tenure.
  • Consistently graduate 20-25 football players in December, giving those players the opportunity to report to a four-year university or college and be able to participate in spring practice.
