SCOOBA – For his trio of standout performances during last week's Bank of Grandin Thanksgiving Classic in Missouri, East Mississippi Community College's Jordan Alexander has been named the MACCC Men's Basketball Player of the Week. The announcement was made Tuesday by the Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference office.
A freshman guard from Buffalo, New York, Alexander averaged 27.3 points and 5.7 rebounds in helping lead head coach Billy Begley's EMCC Lions to a 2-1 record at the three-day holiday tournament played at the Libla Family Sports Complex on the Three Rivers College campus. The 6-foot-4 sharpshooter scored his 82 total points by posting composite accuracy marks of 54 percent (25-46 FGs) overall from the field, 46 percent (12-26 treys) from beyond the three-point arc and 91 percent (20-22 FTs) from the charity stripe over the three games.
After beginning his scoring streak in the Show Me State with 22 points (8-17 FGs & 5-6 FTs) and five rebounds against host Three Rivers College on Thanksgiving night, Alexander came back the following day with 27 points (7-11 FGs, 4-7 treys & 9-10 FTs) and seven boards in EMCC's 84-62 win over Wabash Valley Community College. The product of Lakeland, Florida-based Bay Area Academy then capped his successful tourney stint in Poplar Bluff by matching his season high with 33 points (23 in second half) on 10-of-18 field goals, 7-of-15 treys and 6-of-6 free throws, while adding five rebounds, in the Lions' 95-85 victory over Northeastern Oklahoma A&M.
Having most recently tallied a game-high 22 points (18 in first half) during EMCC's 73-60 home win over Shelton State this past Monday, Alexander currently ranks fourth in the MACCC in season scoring average (20.9 ppg) and tied for 20th nationally among NJCAA Division I statistical leaders. With six 20-point scoring efforts on the season, Alexander previously scored 33 points, including 8-of-13 three-pointers, during the Lions' 83-75 home win over Holmes on Nov. 10. He is averaging 26 points per game over his last four outings.
The 9-2 EMCC Lions will close out their pre-Christmas men's hoops slate by taking on Wallace State-Hanceville on the road Friday (Dec. 5). They will then participate in their fourth in-season tournament of the year by venturing back to the Sunshine State of Florida to compete in the Pensacola State College-hosted New Year's Classic, Dec. 30-31. EMCC is slated to meet Coastal Alabama-North on Tuesday followed by Calhoun the next day prior to the new year.
