JACKSON – East Mississippi Community College's Diovion Famakinde has earned MACCC Men's Basketball Player of the Week honors for his pair of standout performances a week ago. The announcement was made Tuesday by the Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference as voted on the league's sports information directors.
Famakinde, a sophomore guard from Brooklyn, N.Y., averaged 25.5 points during the Lions' 1-1 week, while having shot 58 percent (14-24 FGs) overall from the field, 40 percent (4-10 treys) from beyond the three-point arc and 86 percent (19-22 FTs) from the free throw line.
He opened last week's action by scoring a team-high 24 points at Pearl River on 8-of-13 shooting from the field, including 3-of-7 three-pointers, while hitting all five of his free throw attempts. Famakinde closed out the week by pumping in a career-high 27 points on 6-of-11 field goal shooting and clutch 14-of-17 accuracy from the charity stripe in helping lead EMCC to a 75-70 home victory over Meridian. He also totaled five rebounds, two assists, two steals and a blocked shot during the Lions' winning effort over the Eagles.
For the season, Famakinde ranks as EMCC's second-leading scorer with an average of 16.8 points per game and is the team's No. 2 playmaker on the year with an average of 3.4 assists per contest. He has averaged 22 points through his first four conference outings with three 20-point efforts.
Famakinde played last season at Olney Central College in Illinois after competing one year at the post-graduate level for Virginia-based Hargrave Military Academy.
Famakinde becomes EMCC's second MACCC Men's Basketball Player of the Week recipient this season, joining freshman guard Jordan Alexander, who earned the conference's weekly honor in early December.
Head coach Billy Begley's EMCC Lions (11-9, 1-3 MACCC) travel to Ellisville to meet No. 15 Jones College on Tuesday (Jan. 27) before returning home to play host to Southwest Mississippi on Thursday (Jan. 29). A 5:30 p.m. women's game will be followed by a 7:30 p.m. men's nightcap contest against the Southwest Bears at EMCC's Keyes T. Currie Coliseum on the Scooba campus.
