SENATOBIA – With the second-best team score of the day, the East Mississippi Community College men's golf team carded a 308 during Tuesday's second round at Back Acres Country Club to claim a third-place tie in the fourth tournament of the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges' spring slate.
EMCC's 308 trailed only the 305 carded Tuesday by tournament winner Mississippi Gulf Coast (302-305—607), who claimed a nine-stroke team victory over runner-up Copiah Lincoln (303-313---616). Improving three strokes from Monday's opening-round 311 shot at Wedgewood Golf Course in Olive Branch, East Mississippi tied with Hinds (309-310—619) for third-place team honors. Northeast Mississippi (305-315—620) and host Northwest Mississippi (300-320—620) finished in a fifth-place deadlock ahead of East Central (307-321—628) and Itawamba (326-312—638).
Individually, Co-Lin's Jacob Ross (69-72—141) edged out Alex Tull of Northeast Mississippi (68-73—141) on the second playoff hole to garner medalist honors for the two-day event.
For East Mississippi, Vardaman's Hunter Harmon put together rounds of 77 and 75 to place 12th overall with a composite score of 152. Right behind, fellow EMCC sophomore Steven Eilders, of Ridgeland, finished in a five-way tie for 14th place with rounds of 76 and 78.
Shaving five strokes off Monday's score with a 75 on Tuesday, EMCC's Chase Chitwood's two-round 155 total was good for a four-way tie for 19th place. Caledonia's Trent Humber (78-80—158) and freshman Daniel Schroder (85-80—165) rounded out EMCC's scorecard this week by placing 26th and 38th, respectively.
Coach Benji Williams' EMCC Lions will next participate in the MACJC's fifth and final regular-season spring golf tournament Monday and Tuesday (April 13-14) at Briarwood in Meridian. East Mississippi Community College will then serve as tournament hosts for the MACJC State Men's Golf Championship, April 18-19, at Lion Hills in Columbus.
