Carson Powell’s pair of wins leads EMCC to runner-up team finish in rodeo season opener in Missouri
Carson Powell’s event wins in steer wrestling and tie-down roping helped lead the East Mississippi Community College men’s rodeo team to a runner-up finish in the annual MVC Viking Stampede Rodeo held this past weekend at the Saline County Fairgrounds. The three-day, season-opening NIRA Ozark Region rodeo, hosted by Missouri Valley College, concluded Saturday evening in Marshall, Missouri.
MARSHALL, Mo. – Carson Powell's event wins in steer wrestling and tie-down roping helped lead the East Mississippi Community College men's rodeo team to a runner-up finish in the annual MVC Viking Stampede Rodeo held this past weekend at the Saline County Fairgrounds. The three-day, season-opening NIRA Ozark Region rodeo, hosted by Missouri Valley College, concluded Saturday evening in Marshall, Missouri.
The EMCC men finished just 35 team points behind (630-595) host and team champion Missouri Valley. Northwest Mississippi and West Alabama followed in third and fourth place, respectively, in the men's standings. MVC also captured the women's team title in the season opener with 267.5 points.
Powell claimed the steer wrestling event by posting times of 3.9 and 4.8 seconds to earn 170 points while also capturing tie-down roping honors (155 points) with a pair of 10.5-second efforts. In addition, the Benton, Arkansas native paired with teammate Kade Hollingsworth (Nanih Waiya, MS) in team roping to collect 60 points apiece and capture men's all-around individual honors for the weekend with 385 points among his three event finishes.
The Lions' remaining 270 men's points came in the team roping competition, where seven EMCC participants advanced to Saturday's short-go round. Colton Mewbourn (Mathiston, MS/East Webster HS) and Dylan Jones (Lena, MS/Leake Academy) teamed to earn runner-up team roping honors, while EMCC's Ryder Griffith (Danville, AL) paired with UT Martin's Cooper Stone to earn 30 points apiece.
Alyssa Llewellyn (Wibaux, MT) collected the lone 10 team points for the EMCC women in the MVC-hosted season opener by partnering with T. Johnson (Flora, MS/Tri-County Academy) of the EMCC men's team in the team roping event. In addition, Karson Moore (Albertville, AL) of the EMCC women's squad garnered 25 individual points in breakaway roping.
Coach Morgan Goodrich's EMCC rodeo teams will continue Ozark Region competition this week (Sept. 25-27) at the annual UWA Rodeo Showdown, hosted by the University of West Alabama, at the Hines-Spree Rodeo Complex in Livingston, Alabama.
