LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The East Mississippi Community College women's rodeo team placed third at last weekend's UWA Rodeo Showdown hosted annually by the University of West Alabama. The three-day NIRA Ozark Region event concluded with Saturday's championship round at UWA's Hines-Spree Rodeo Complex.
Finishing just 30 team points behind women's runner-up Northwest Mississippi, EMCC was led by freshmen Keylee Zancanella (Aurora, SD) and Alyssa Llewellyn (Wibaux, MT), who combined for all of the Lions' 140 team points.
Zancanella totaled 80 points for the Lions that were divided between barrel racing (50) and breakaway roping (30), while Llewellyn recorded the team's other 60 points with a first-round winning effort of 2.2 seconds in breakaway roping.
On the men's side, EMCC freshman Sanders McElroy (Mountain View, AR) paired with his brother, Scout McElroy of Southern Arkansas University, to collect 100 points apiece in team roping for their respective schools. Posting an aggregate score of 18.2 seconds, the tandem claimed a runner-up finish with a 6.4-second time in the opening round.
Missouri Valley College swept the team titles with the men outdistancing host and runner-up West Alabama by 185 points (780-595) and the women winning by 200 points (370-170) over second-place NWCC.
Coach Morgan Goodrich's EMCC Lions now take a week away from competition before returning to action, Oct. 9-11, at the Southern Arkansas University-hosted rodeo to be held in Magnolia, Ark.
