MARTIN, Tenn. – East Mississippi Community College's Carson Powell claimed his second straight steer wrestling event win with his third first-place finish of the season coming this past weekend at the 58th Annual UT Martin Rodeo. Hosted by the University of Tennessee at Martin, the three-day Ozark Region event concluded this past Saturday at the Ned McWherter Agricultural Complex.
By claiming the maximum 180 points with first-place times of 3.6 and 3.8 seconds during the two rounds this past week, Powell extended his season lead among the Ozark Region's steer wrestling standings with 785 total points. He owns a 230-point lead over current runner-up Tyler Porter of Pearl River Community College in the region standings with two events remaining in the 2025-26 season.
Powell previously claimed the steer wrestling event titles at last month's Pearl River Community College Rodeo as well as during the season-opening Missouri Valley College-hosted Viking Stampede Rodeo held back in September. The Arkansas native also advanced to Saturday's tie-down roping finals at UT Martin, though he did not score.
As a team on the men's side, the EMCC Lions placed sixth at the UT Martin rodeo with 250 total points. EMCC's other 70 points were earned by Ryder Griffith (Danville, AL), who paired with Cooper Stone, of host UTM, in the team roping competition.
The EMCC women got on the scoreboard this past weekend with Sunnie Cerezo (Nauvoo, AL) grabbing five points in the breakaway roping competition. She also paired with EMCC's Alyssa Llewellyn (Wibaux, MT) to advance to Saturday's championship round of the team roping event, though the tandem did not score.
