SCOOBA – Freshman pitcher Britney Bonney scattered four hits and struck out eight during East Mississippi Community College's 9-2 home win over Hinds during Saturday's rain-shortened MACJC action played at the EMCC Softball Field. The nightcap was halted in the bottom of the third inning due to inclement weather with the visiting Lady Eagles leading 9-0.
Hinds owned the early advantage in the opening game with solo tallies in the first and third innings on RBI singles by Madeleine Hart and Claudette Galvin, respectively.
EMCC's late-game offensive surge got kick-started by freshman Hope Thames' two-out solo home run off Hinds starting pitcher Cassidy Rhea in the fourth inning. The Lady Lions manufactured a second run in the frame on a double steal to tie the score at 2-2.
EMCC took its first lead an inning later on Madelyn Wilkes' clutch two-out, two-run single to the opposite field on an 0-2 count. The Noxapater product then capped a five-run sixth inning for the Lady Lions with another RBI single. Wilkes was one of five EMCC players with two hits in the victory, joining Thames, Kelsey English, Avery Bouchillon and Blake Bond.
In winning her third game in her last four decisions, Bonney allowed a pair of singles in both the first and third innings but settled down to keep Hinds hitless over the last four innings. During her last four pitching appearances, the former Madison Central High School standout has surrendered just three runs on 13 hits, while striking out 15 and walking seven, over 25.1 total innings of work in the circle.
Coach Austin McNair's EMCC Lady Lions, 4-14 overall and 4-9 in conference play, will travel to Booneville to take on the 13th-ranked Northeast Mississippi Lady Tigers in a Tuesday twin bill slated for a 3 p.m. start at David Carnell Memorial Field.
