DECATUR -- The visiting EMCC Lady Lions battled from behind nearly the entire contest before dropping a 50-42 road decision to East Central during Monday's MACCC women's basketball action played at Brackeen-Wood Gymnasium.
The EMCC women couldn't quite get over the hump after battling from behind virtually the entire contest. In the opening half, the Lady Lions cut a 16-7 deficit at the quarter break down to two points (19-17) on a basket by Cenaya Calhoun-Jingles. A 7-2 run by the Lady Warriors to close the first half made it a 26-19 contest at the intermission.
As they did in the second quarter, the visitors outscored East Central (14-8) during the third quarter. After ECCC went back up by as many as nine points (30-21) early in the quarter, the Lady Lions responded with a 12-4 run that briefly gave them a one-point lead (33-32) with 2:12 left on Dukiaha Jones' pull-up jumper. The brief lead was the lone advantage that EMCC would own in the game.
The visitors knotted the score at 34-34 to open the fourth quarter with a Jones free throw. The Lady Warriors answered with a three-point basket and later increased their lead to six points (43-37) midway through the quarter.
Micaiah Satcher helped keep the Lady Lions within reach with a pair of free throws earlier in the quarter. With 13 of her team-high 19 points coming in the second half, the sophomore guard then drilled a three-pointer to cut East Central's six-point lead in half (45-42) with 2:35 remaining in the contest.
EMCC's comeback attempt in the women's game then came to a halt, however, when the visitors were not able to score again coming down the stretch.
Head coach Isaiah Butler's EMCC Lady Lions (5-16, 2-7 MACCC) will return home to play host to the Lady Trojans of Mississippi Delta on Thursday (Feb. 12). A 5:30 p.m. women's game will be followed by a 7:30 p.m. men's contest at Keyes T. Currie Coliseum on the Scooba campus.
